The fallout from the failure of our consumer culture is here. All of us, any of us can be homeless as this video so aptly illustrates.
In the video, you can see that everyone attributes their homelessness, their dire straights, to the lack of a job. The problem is no job so of course the solution is find a job – create resumes, send emails, etc., etc. What happens when there are NO JOBS?
Our “free market” system has never been very good or very efficient at matching people to job opportunties. Economic “displacements” have adversely affected people for many years. These displacements occur when demand suddently shifts from one product or industry to another. This can happen when new techology makes products, services or even entire industries obsolete.
In the past, these changes happened slowly enough to allow people to retrain and adjust to the changes in the markets, etc. However, the pace of change has been accelerating exponentially for awhile now. It is now reaching the point where human beings can’t adjust fast enough. We can’t adjust our buying habits, we can’t adjust our production and infrastructure and we can’t even afford the constant new investment it takes to keep up.
Let’s start a conversation about creating a new world, a new economy that really serves people and meets our needs. Let’s stop being deceived, let’s give up disguising our wants as needs. We don’t need fix it’s, we need compassion and acceptance of all human beings.
